Sinergest’s heart of solidarity beats even stronger at Christmas
The new home of the Community of Sant’Egidio will be built in the former soup kitchen of the railway workers’ club, next to the Lucca train station. This multipurpose center will become a hub for the city’s poor, where those in need and those who want to help can turn to it. Unfortunately, due to its state of neglect in recent years, the facility has fallen into disrepair. The Community of Sant’Egidio will undertake the renovation, thanks in part to the support of Sinergest For, the charitable arm of Sinergest.
The Community of Sant’Egidio House in Lucca
The Community of Sant’Egidio has been present in Lucca since 2001 and has from the beginning been close to the city’s most marginalized: the elderly, the homeless, migrants, vulnerable children and families, and prisoners. Service to the poor is based on generosity and volunteerism. Over the years, a sensitivity to all forms of poverty has developed.
With persistence and conviction, the Community managed to obtain, on free loan, the premises of the former state railway canteen.
The premises offered by Fer Servizi finally provide the opportunity to create a multipurpose center, to carry out regular and concentrated activities and services for the poorest, such as a soup kitchen, food distribution, an Italian language school, a conference room, and a laundry for the poor.
After 20 years, it would be the Community’s first real headquarters and a point of reference where those in need, and those who want to help, can turn.
The first thing to do now? Renovate an abandoned building and restore it to its former glory.
